The 2016 Subaru Outback earned a five-star overall rating in government crash tests, with five stars for total frontal crash protection and five stars for side impact protection. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety awarded the Outback its highest possible rating of "good" in small-overlap frontal-offset, moderateoverlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strangth tests. Its seat/head restraint design was also rated " good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
